Shan and Student
Why did you choose to work for OCE?

I chose OCE because the staff and mangers are friendly and very understanding about other peoples views and culture. I have the chance to see my students grow as I teach students from a beginner level. OCE also accepts and encourages you to be yourself, from being jovial, to wearing blue hair. This makes my job more fun and less stressful. OCE believes in giving people the opportunity to excel despite your background or experiences.

What do you think is special about OCE?

I love the fact that nobody judges you based on appearance or fashion sense. When I come to work everyday, it feels like I am visiting my extended family. The students here are wonderful and really kind. They also have many activities and functions that both teachers and students can participate in.

I am currently a Japanese language student. I started to look for a part-time job and I discovered that my sister knew the manager. She informed me that he was one of the nicest people she has ever met and worked for, I have come to find out that she was telling the truth. I am truly happy to be working here and would recommend everyone to work here.

What do you enjoy about teaching?

I have always enjoyed helping people and I have worked in the customer service field for a long time. Teaching is something I really enjoy doing. Prior to coming to Japan, I did not know much about the culture. Teaching is the perfect way to help others understand this wonderful language while learning about their awesome culture. The feeling of knowing you helped someone is very fulfilling.

When did you make a difference in a student’s life?

I have a private student that said he has been practicing English for years. He recently got engaged to a Canadian woman. Prior to coming to OCE, he met with her father but they could not speak much due to his English level. After he did a few months of classes, he went to Canada to meet her family. When he returned from his trip, he was super excited to tell me that he was able to speak with her father. I felt really proud of the both of us, him for trying hard and me for being able to help him improve.
